NIKKI LING

I lay in bed tossing and turning all night. I kept envisioning Noki shot in the head. Her eyes were open and blood was oozing out from her wound. Just like Steven.

What I didn’t understand was why the kidnappers had taken Noki and not me? I was Jack’s wife. Were they under the assumption that I was the multi–millionaire? Then it dawned on me that maybe they took Noki because they couldn’t wait for my arrival. Maybe my leaving for Tennessee had somehow altered their plan. Was Tennessee my fate? Some people believe that our lives are pre-planned. Had fate put me in a crisis to avoid one?

Soon, I decided that trying to get inside the head of criminals was not helpful. For once, nepotism was overrated. Noki always received preferential treatment as my sister. This time, it may have cost her her life.

When I awoke, it was a little after seven. I limped into our master bedroom. Jack was gone. I immediately ran around as best as I could, checking every room. He had left without me I realized. I tried him on his cellular phone and he picked up on the second ring.

“Jack, where are you?” I anxiously questioned.

“Nikki, I will not entertain this. I am on my way to the office.”

“THE OFFICE!”

“Correct, the office.”

“Jack, I need that mon—” click.

I showered and dressed in twenty minutes, threw on a pair of Jackie O signature sunglasses to cover my bruised eyes, a little lipstick to cover my bruised lips, and a tight T-shirt to distract from everything else. I looked quickly at my reflection in the mirror, concluded I looked great and headed straight over to National Republic Federal Bank where Jack had his accounts. I waited until the bank opened and asked to speak to the bank’s manager.

A distinguished, older gentleman approached with caution.

“May I help you with something, madam?”

“Yes. My name is Nikkisi Ling—Okayo.”

“Why, Mrs. Okayo, it’s a pleasure to meet you,” he replied with a broad grin, then continued, “Your husband is one of our valued customers. What can I do for you today?”

I wondered how much longer his fake grin would be plastered on his face once he heard my news.

“I need to make a withdrawal,” I said unflinchingly. Then continued, “$1 million. I need that this morning.”

“Are you authorized to withdraw from your husband’s accounts?” he questioned. If he were suspicious of anything, he didn’t waver in any way. He remained professional.

“Yes.”

“Good. Just fill out this withdrawal slip, while I go in the back and check for your signature on file. Have a seat, it will only take a moment. But once this is done, it will take the bank a few hours to gather such an amount of money.”

“Of course, it will. Just don’t let it take longer than that,” I boldly replied. We both smiled graciously at each other. Then his eyes glanced down at my T-shirt that read: I fucked Osama! He pursed his thin lips together and left me alone for a brief moment.
